Al-Wasiti, the founder of the Baghdad school of illustration, was also an outstanding calligrapher, a fact evident in his beautiful naskh style. All that they expected was a literarily faithful, imaginative and meaningful visual translation of their favorite text and thus an appropriate status symbol for their position.
His interest for people is balanced by a much smaller attention for the vegetation, primarily stereotyped. He did not observe the vegetation in the same way and his plants, even the trees he utilizes so artfully, remain stereotyped maqamat al hariri primarily ornamental.
